Congratulations on your engagement! As a church we are committed to assisting you and preparing you for your marriage. Premarital counseling at South Bay Church is usually done by qualified and trained couples or individuals called “marriage mentors.” These marriage mentors are pastors or key leaders at South Bay. We are so glad you are interested in being matched with a marriage mentor couple who will commit to walking along side you during your engagement.

To get started, please fill out the “Request for Marriage Mentoring” form so that we can make the best match possible for you.

Below are the basic steps in the counseling process. The process usually starts 4 months before the wedding ceremony, but we can start as soon as you would like.

    • Two weeks prior to your first appointment with your Marriage Mentor, you will be sent a link to a Prepare & Enrich Assessment.  PREPARE/ENRICH is a customized couple assessment completed online that identifies a couple’s strength and growth areas.
    • The first meeting is an opportunity for you to share your stories with the Marriage Mentor, ask questions about the process, and review the assessment results.
  3. 4-8 MEETINGS
    • The Marriage Mentor will then work with you to schedule 4-8 feedback sessions in which they will help you discuss and understand your results and teach you proven relationship skills.
    • If you would like a South Bay Church pastor to perform your wedding, please let us know as soon as possible. Also, if you would like to apply to use our North San Jose Campus or Sunnyvale Campus for your ceremony, please request a “Facility Application” from our office.

Is there a cost? Premarital counseling at South Bay Church is free of charge, but the Prepare & Enrich Assessment costs $35 per couple. You can pay for it online when the link is sent to you. When a pastor performs a wedding ceremony, it is customary to give them a minimum honorarium of $250 as a way of honoring their time and presence in your wedding.

Frequency of meetings:  Premarital counseling meetings should start at a minimum of 3 months before the wedding ceremony. They will typically be scheduled weekly or biweekly.

South Bay Church does not have any trained counseling professionals, but our pastors are available to meet with you if needed.

If you would like to meet with one of our pastors, please email us at

For longer care and professional counseling, we suggest the San Jose Christian Counseling Center.
